Tibial Tubercle Osteotomy (TTO)

The tibial tubercle is where the patella inserts at the front of the skin bone. An osteotomy is a controlled break of bone to allow tissues to be realigned. During a TTO the tibial tubercle is taken off the shin bone in a domino shaped segment and then a small segment is removed to allow the segment to be slid down the shin bone. This pulls the patella tendon and the patella with it and allows the patella to be bought into a new position. This increases the contact area and congruity of the patellofemoral joint which can be done for pain or instability of the kneecap.
